After 37-years of work, Linda Beck—known to most of us as ‘Lindsey’ or ‘Linz’—will retire at the end of July 2015.
Thirty-seven years, a number of positions and a few deployments under her belt, Beck is calling it quits.
“My career working for the U.S. Army and Corps of Engineers has been a wonderful experience all around,” she said.
Entering civil service in 1979 as GS-2 Data Transcriber at Ft. Ritchie, Md., Beck worked many positions throughout her career, to include: GS-3/5 Budget Technician at the Ft. Ritchie Commissary in 1981; GS-3 Travel Clerk/S1 and then was promoted to GS-5 Assistant Budget/Accounting Tech in the budget office here at USARB-Raleigh N.C. from 1987-1990. From 1990-1994 as Secretary with the 72d FA BN and Secretary with the 98th Area Support Team during its base closure in Wertheim, Germany. She then relocated to West Point, N.Y. with her husband where she worked for the Readiness Group, Stewart Army Subpost, New Windsor, NY, as the Commander’s Secretary from 1994-1996. Upon her husband Jim’s retirement, she returned back to Raleigh where she was re-hired with USARB as the Command Secretary and then promoted to GS-7, Service Support Technician, S4 section, from 2007 till her retirement.
And Beck acts like this was all no big deal.
“It was just something I always wanted to do,” she said.
But her career did not all occur on U.S. soil.
She spent some time deployed from 2008-2011, serving as Executive Assistant, GS-9/11, to the commander, USACE-Gulf Region District, Camp Wolfe, Victory Base Complex, Baghdad, Iraq and from 2013-2014 as Administration Officer, GS-11, for Kabul Area Office, USACE-North District, Afghanistan in Kabul.
“Serving as the Executive Assistant to the commander, Gulf Region District while deployed with the Corps of Engineers in Baghdad, Iraq, where I served three years, was an awesome experience to serve as a civilian,” said Beck, thanking Raleigh Battalion for letting her stay that long.
And Beck said that she has met many great people during her 37-year tenure.
“I have worked with, met and made many great friends through the years. I am truly blessed and wish everyone all the best in their futures and careers,” she said.
She believes that team and unit cohesion, and the mantra Carpe Diem are paramount.
“Always be a team player in whatever unit you serve and live each day to the fullest - life is too short not to,” Beck advises her fellow colleagues.
Beck plans to reside in Garner, N.C. and work part-time for News America Marketing, of which she has already been doing for the past eight plus years. She also plans to take up golfing, camp and travel with her husband Jim and ‘wait for the grandkids to come,’ she said.
She and Jim have two sons, both of whom are married--Jason, living in Lexington, KY and Jamie, living in Raleigh.
